Finding Purpose at The Robin’s Nest Children’s Home

7/29/13

As I reach the seventh week of my stay in Montego Bay, I can truly say that God has been guiding my steps, even when I felt out of place staying at my friend’s house. This week has been a testament to that guidance.

Last year, during my visit to Jamaica in October 2012, I felt a strong urge in my spirit to find an orphanage. I asked everyone I could, but no one could give me a clear answer. Determined, I returned to North Carolina and began collecting children’s clothes, still unsure of the exact plan.

Feeling out of place and seeking God’s direction, I found myself in town one day when I noticed two white girls sitting in the square, waiting for their ride. I struck up a conversation with them, and they told me about The Robin’s Nest. They even provided me with the director’s name and number. It felt like divine intervention. I called the number and made arrangements to visit the orphanage.

The Robin’s Nest is a beautiful place, filled with wonderful children and surrounded by stunning hills and trees. Located high in the hills, it’s not easily accessible by taxi, so the orphanage’s van picks up visitors from the main road or designated spots in town. It’s a haven for nature lovers and a popular spot for volunteers from around the world who come to work with these precious kids, offering them the love and care they need.

When I met with the director, Vickie, I shared my feelings of being called to do something but not knowing what. As we talked, she revealed her vision of growing crops for the orphanage. My heart swelled with joy. I realized this was my purpose, the reason God had brought me here.

Reflecting on my time in North Carolina, I now see the process I went through—learning to grow plants from seeds and using mini greenhouses—was all part of God’s plan. Despite not having formal education beyond a Master Gardener class, I learned through reading and hands-on experience. Now, I can use these skills for His purpose.

Being at The Robin’s Nest feels like finding home and purpose all at once. I’m excited to see how I can contribute and grow alongside this beautiful community.
